Google announces Android platform

The long expected Google announcement last week was for many an anti-climax. Not a special ‘Google Phone’ was announced but the mobile platform Android.
This platform hopes to set an open handset standard, uniforming the mobile software, independent of operator and mobile manufacturer, and this way accelerating the development of mobile services.
Reactions to the announcement were mixed. Some believe that Android will benefit the consumer by setting a new level of openness. Others, including Proximus, fear it will fragmentize the market even more. Base thinks that Android will make the mobile data traffic more accessible, which will generate more revenue for the operators.
