5 billion SMS in 2007

Belgian newspaper L’Echo reports:
In 2007, about 5 billion Belgian SMS messages were sent out, which is on average 500 messages per mobile subscriber. About 120 million of those messages were premium messages. Since those cost on average 1 euro, this generated about 120 million euro. Premium SMS can contain news alerts, horoscopes, games, ring tones and sms votes.
Premium SMS can cause complaints, for example for unsollicited messages (‘sms spam’). The Wireless Access Service Providers (WASP), including MobileWeb.be, are fighting these malpractices by obliging all client applications to be compliant with the GOF Guidelines.
