Augmented Reality, the next big thing in mobile?

I was watching the presentation of Bruce Sterling on augmented reality. He describes it as the next big thing in mobile. That reminds me of the presentation of Marc Vanlerberghe (Google) on last year’s Web Goes Mobile seminar, who showed us a video of Wikitude:

The options indeed are endless. The video above shows us the opportunities for tourism; finding touristic and historical information from points of interest in your neighborhood. But it can go much further than that. Imagine you’re in a city that you’re unfamiliar with. Just use the GPS of your smartphone and find the nearest cash machine, hospital, Chinese restaurant, gas station, train station,… you name it! If the augmented reality browser connects to your social networks (facebook, linkedin, netlog,…), it can also find your friends in the neighborhood.

A good example of such a AR browser is Layar, which has announced its second generation browser a few days ago. Some of the new functionality: “For every Point of Interest (POI), several actions can be taken such as: linking to a mobile site for more information, playing a live location based trivia game, linking to a video or sound clip, clicking to call for reservations, and looking at a route description to the POI.”
Another interesting application offered by Layar: you hold up your smartphone in a city and the AR browser indicates all the houses for sale in the neighborhood.

Google believes in browsers, not app stores

Interesting article on the future of app stores and browsers, and the opinion of Google regarding this matter:

App stores do not represent the future of the mobile industry according to Google’s vice president of engineering Vic Gundotra, who maintains consumers will instead turn to web browsers to fill their information and entertainment needs. Speaking Thursday at the Mobilebeat conference in San Francisco, Gundotra said no one, including Google, is rich enough to support all of the myriad mobile platforms in existence, a circumstance that mandates a shift in thinking away from the fragmented app store model.

“What we clearly see happening is a move to incredibly powerful browsers,” Gundotra said. “Many, many applications can be delivered through the browser and what that does for our costs is stunning. We believe the web has won and over the next several years, the browser, for economic reasons almost, will become the platform that matters and certainly that’s where Google is investing.” Gundotra added that Apple CEO Steve Jobs proclaimed “Build for the web” with the initial launch of the iPhone, a statement that met with resistance from developers: “I think Steve really did understand that, over the long term, it would be the web, and I think that’s how things will play out.”

Mobile web use increases with 94%

According to a report from browser supplier Opera, the use of the mobile web has increased with 94% in the past year.  In November 2008, users of the mobile browser Opera Mini surfed through 5,7 billion mobile pages.  That’s an increase of more than 300% compared to a year earlier.  Most popular mobile sites were Google, Facebook and Bebo.

According to Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera, the success is due to the fact that people now can and want to surf mobile.
